What is a Random Number Generator?

A random number generator picks a number for you without any pattern that you can predict. You give it a range, for example 1 to 100, and it picks a whole number from that range. People use it when they need a fair, neutral pick: choosing a winner, deciding who goes first, drawing a roll number in class, making sample data or just settling a small argument.

This tool lets you set your own minimum and maximum, make one number or many, and choose whether numbers may repeat.

How to Generate a Random Number

  1. Type the Minimum and the Maximum, for example 1 and 100.
  2. Choose how many numbers you want. The default is 1.
  3. Tick Unique Numbers Only if the same number must not appear twice in the same batch.
  4. Click Generate. A single number rolls and stops in large type in the center. Several numbers appear as cards in a grid.
  5. Click Copy Numbers to copy the result, or Generate again for a new one.
  6. Click Reset to clear everything and start again.

One Number or Many Numbers

  • One number: The result is shown very large in the center. A short rolling animation runs first, and then the number stops on your result. The animation is only for show, because the result is already decided when you click.
  • Many numbers: Each number is shown as a card in a grid, so that a whole batch is easy to read and to copy.
  • Whole numbers only: The tool makes whole numbers such as 7 or 42, and not decimals.

Unique Numbers Only

By default, each number is picked on its own, so the same number can come up more than once, just like rolling a die several times. With Unique Numbers Only ticked, a number that has been picked is not picked again in that batch. It works like drawing numbered tickets from a bag without putting them back.

  • Use it when you need different numbers: for several winners, several students, a list of different seats or a set of distinct sample values.
  • Leave it off when repeats are fine, for example for repeated dice-like picks or for test data.
  • The quantity cannot be bigger than the range. A range from 1 to 10 has only 10 numbers, so you cannot ask for 11 unique numbers. The tool shows a message when you do.
  • Each Generate click is a new batch. Unique means unique inside one batch. A number from an earlier click can come up again in a later click.

How unique picks change the chance

If you pick several unique numbers from 1 to 10, the chance that one particular number is included is the quantity divided by 10:

Unique numbers picked from 1 to 10Chance that a particular number is included
110%
330%
550%
10100%

With repeats allowed, three picks from 1 to 10 give a particular number about a 27.1 percent chance of showing up at least once, which is a little lower than the 30 percent with unique numbers.

The Chance of Each Number

Every whole number in the range has the same chance. The range has this many numbers:

numbers in the range = maximum - minimum + 1
chance of each number = 1 / numbers in the range

The "plus 1" is there because both ends can be picked. The range 5 to 15 has 15 - 5 + 1 = 11 numbers.

1 to 66about 16.7%

Repeats Are Normal

When repeats are allowed, people are often surprised to see the same number twice. It happens sooner than it feels like it should. Here are the chances that at least one number appears twice in a batch of numbers picked from 1 to 100:

Numbers picked from 1 to 100 (repeats allowed)Chance of at least one repeat
5about 9.7%
10about 37.2%

A repeat does not mean that the generator is broken. If you do not want repeats, tick Unique Numbers Only.

Also remember that every pick is independent. A number that has not come up for a long time is not "due", and a number that has just come up is not less likely next time. Believing otherwise is called the gambler's fallacy.

Is It Really Random?

The tool uses your browser's random number generator. It is a computer method that gives numbers with no pattern that people can notice, and it is not a physical process such as rolling a real die. That is good enough for games, classroom activities, small decisions and casual draws.

  • Not for gambling or lotteries. Do not use it for games of chance that involve money or prizes that must be fair and checked by law.
  • Not for passwords or security codes. Use the Password Generator for those, because security needs a tool that is built for it.
  • Not an official or audited draw. If other people have to be able to check the result, use a method that they can verify, and let them watch the draw.

What Can You Use It For?

For rolling dice, use the Dice Roller. To pick from a list of names, use the Random Picker Wheel.

Using It for a Giveaway or a Class Draw

  • Number the entries first. Write down who has which number, for example comment 1, comment 2 and so on, before you generate anything.
  • Agree on the rules in advance. Decide whether the number is picked once, how many winners there are and what happens if a winner does not answer.
  • Let people watch. Share your screen or record it, so that others can see the number come up.
  • Accept the first result. Re-picking until you like the number is not a fair draw.
  • Check the rules for your case. Rules for giveaways, raffles and contests differ between countries and platforms, and some draws need permission or have conditions.
  • The tool does not check entries. It only makes numbers.

Tips

  • Count carefully. For 30 students, the range is 1 to 30. If your numbering starts at 0, use 0 to 29.
  • Use Unique Numbers Only for several winners so that nobody wins twice in one draw.
  • Copy before you generate again. A new click makes a new batch. The history shows recent results, but copy what you need right away.
  • Use a small range for quick decisions and a bigger range when you need many different numbers.
  • Check the minimum and maximum before you click, because a typo changes the whole range.

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting that both ends are included: 1 to 100 has 100 numbers, and 100 can be picked.
  • Asking for more unique numbers than the range has: 1 to 10 cannot give 11 different numbers.
  • Expecting no repeats without ticking Unique Numbers Only.
  • Thinking that a repeat means the tool is broken. Repeats are normal when they are allowed.
  • Thinking that a number is due: Past results do not change the next pick.
  • Using it for passwords, PINs or security codes.
  • Using it for gambling or an official draw that must be certified.
  • Re-generating until you get the number you wanted.

Good to Know

  • The tool makes whole numbers only.
  • The minimum must not be bigger than the maximum.
  • Very large numbers and very large quantities are limited, and the tool tells you the limit.
  • The rolling animation only decorates a result that is already decided.
  • The history keeps recent results while the page is open. It is gone when you close or reload the page.

Privacy

  • The numbers are made in your browser, and nothing you enter or generate is sent to our server.
  • We do not save your numbers. They disappear when you close or reload the page, so copy what you need.
  • No signup, no account and no app install are needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I generate a random number between two numbers?

Type the minimum and the maximum, for example 1 and 100, leave the quantity at 1 and click Generate. A random whole number between the two, including both ends, appears in large type. Click Generate again for a new one.

Can I generate more than one number at once?

Yes. Set the quantity to the number of results that you want and click Generate. Several numbers are shown as cards in a grid. There is a maximum quantity for each click, and the tool tells you when you go over it.

What does Unique Numbers Only do?

When it is ticked, no number appears twice in the same batch, like drawing numbered tickets from a bag without putting them back. When it is not ticked, every number is picked on its own, so the same number can come up more than once. With Unique Numbers Only you cannot ask for more numbers than the range has. For example, 1 to 10 has only 10 numbers, so you cannot get 11 unique numbers.

Are the minimum and the maximum included?

Yes. Both ends of the range can be picked. For 1 to 100, both 1 and 100 are possible.

Are the numbers truly random?

The tool uses your browser's random number generator, which is a computer method and not a physical one. That is fine for games, classroom activities, small decisions and casual giveaways. It is not meant for gambling, lotteries, security codes or any official draw that must be certified or checked.

What is the chance of each number?

Every whole number in the range has the same chance. The chance is 1 divided by how many numbers the range has. For 1 to 10 it is 10 percent, and for 1 to 100 it is 1 percent. The range 1 to 100 has 100 numbers, because both ends count: the maximum minus the minimum, plus 1.

Why did the same number come up twice?

Repeats are a normal part of random picking, and they come sooner than most people expect. If you pick 10 numbers from 1 to 100 and repeats are allowed, there is about a 37 percent chance that at least one number appears twice. If you do not want repeats, tick Unique Numbers Only.

If a number has not come up for a long time, is it more likely next?

No. Each pick is independent, so earlier results do not change the chances of the next one. Believing that a number is due is called the gambler's fallacy.

Can I use it for a giveaway, a raffle or a lucky draw?

It works for a casual draw that people can watch, such as a classroom prize or a small online giveaway, for example to pick a ticket number or a comment number. It does not check entries and it is not an audited or certified draw. Rules for giveaways, raffles and contests differ between countries and platforms, so check the rules that apply to you. Do not use it for gambling.

Can I use it to make passwords or security codes?

No. Passwords, PINs and security codes need a generator that is built for security, such as the Password Generator on this website. This tool is made for everyday numbers and games.

Does it make whole numbers or decimals?

Whole numbers only, such as 7 or 42. It does not make decimals such as 3.14.

What if my minimum is bigger than my maximum?

The tool shows a message, and you need to fix the two numbers. The minimum must not be bigger than the maximum.

Is there a limit on the numbers or the quantity?

Yes. Very large numbers and very large quantities are limited so that the page stays fast and the numbers stay exact. The tool tells you the limit when you go over it.

What do Copy Numbers, Reset and the history do?

Copy Numbers copies the numbers that you just generated so that you can paste them into a message or a spreadsheet. The history lists your recent results so that you can look back at them. Reset clears your results and lets you start again.

Is my data sent to a server?

No. The numbers are made in your browser using JavaScript, and nothing you enter or generate is sent to our server.

Is this random number generator free, and does it work on mobile?

Yes. The tool is free and needs no signup. It is designed for phone screens as well as desktop.
