What is a PDF Compressor?
A PDF compressor reduces the file size of a PDF so it is easier to upload, email and share. Many online portals, such as job, college and government application forms, set a maximum upload size, often a few hundred KB or a few MB. A scanned PDF with high-resolution images can easily cross that limit, and compressing it can help you fit within it.
This compressor works in your browser, so your PDF is not uploaded to a server.
How much can a PDF shrink?
The reduction depends on what is inside your PDF. Results vary, and we cannot promise a fixed percentage.
| PDF type | Why it is large | Possible reduction |
|---|---|---|
| Scanned documents, photos | High-resolution images | Can be large |
| PDFs with many embedded fonts or metadata | Extra data | Moderate |
| Text-only PDFs | Mostly text and fonts | Usually small |
| Already compressed PDFs | Nothing left to remove | Little or none |
How to Compress a PDF
- Open the Compress PDF tool and select your PDF file.
- Click Compress PDF.
- Check the size of the new file.
- Download the compressed PDF and open it to check that it looks fine.
Reaching a Target Size (100 KB, 200 KB, 2 MB)
Compression alone cannot always reach an exact size. If your file is still too big, try these.
| Target | What to try |
|---|---|
| Under 2 MB | Compress the PDF. If it is still large, scan at 150 to 200 DPI instead of 300 DPI. |
| Under 200 KB | Scan in black and white or grayscale instead of color, crop the margins, and scan fewer pages per file. |
| Under 100 KB | Use a single page if the form allows it. Compress your scanned image first with our Image Compressor, then convert it with JPG to PDF. |
| One file is too big for the limit | Split it with Split PDF and upload the parts separately. |
Your PDF Stays on Your Device
Many online PDF compressors upload your file to a server. This tool processes your PDF in your browser, so documents such as ID proofs, tax records and resumes are not sent to our server. Large files may be slow on older phones because they use your device's memory.
Things to Know
- Image quality may drop. Compression reduces image quality to reduce size. Check the result before you submit it.
- Keep your original file. You cannot restore the original quality from a compressed copy.
- Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked first. Use our Password Remover if you know the password.
- Digitally signed PDFs. Changing a signed PDF makes the digital signature invalid.
- Text. Text remains selectable and searchable after compression.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much will the PDF size be reduced?
It depends on the PDF. Scanned PDFs with large images can shrink a lot. Text-only and already optimized PDFs shrink little or not at all.
Will my PDF become blurry?
Compression reduces image quality to save space, so images can look softer. Check the compressed file before you submit it.
Why did my PDF not get smaller?
The file may already be optimized, or it may mostly contain text. Try scanning at a lower DPI or in grayscale, or split the PDF into parts.
Can I compress a PDF to exactly 100 KB or 200 KB?
The tool cannot target an exact size. See the tips above for getting closer to your limit.
Is it safe to compress my PDF here?
Yes. The compression runs in your browser and your file is not uploaded to our server.
Can I compress a password-protected PDF?
Unlock it first with our Password Remover, then compress it.
Is there a file size limit?
The limit depends on your device. Very large files can be slow or fail on phones.
Is the PDF compressor free?
Yes. It is free and needs no signup.
