What is a YouTube Thumbnail Downloader?
Every YouTube video has a thumbnail, the small picture that you see in search results, on the home page and in suggestions. YouTube keeps this picture in several sizes. A thumbnail downloader finds those pictures for a video and lets you save the one you want, without taking a screenshot.
You paste the video link, the tool works out the video ID in your browser, and the thumbnails that exist for that video appear in a grid. This tool downloads thumbnail pictures only. It does not download videos.
How to Download a YouTube Thumbnail
- Open the video on YouTube and copy its link from the address bar or from the Share button.
- Paste the link into the box above. The video ID is found automatically.
- Look at the thumbnails in the grid. The exact size, such as 1280x720, is shown under each one.
- Click Download Image under the size you want.
If the picture opens in a new tab on your phone, press and hold it and choose Save image. Browsers do not always let a page save a picture from another website directly.
What You See on the Page
| Item | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Link box | Where you paste the YouTube video link, or just the video ID |
| Thumbnail grid | The thumbnail sizes that exist for that video |
| Resolution under each picture | The exact width and height in pixels, for example 1280x720 |
| Download Image | Saves that thumbnail as a JPG file |
| Messages | Tell you when a link is not recognised or when no thumbnail is available |
Links That Work
You can paste most YouTube link types. The tool takes the video ID out of the link and ignores the rest.
| Link type | Looks like |
|---|---|
| Normal video link | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID |
| Short link (Share button) | https://youtu.be/VIDEO_ID |
| Shorts link | https://www.youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID |
| Embed link | https://www.youtube.com/embed/VIDEO_ID |
| Live link | https://www.youtube.com/live/VIDEO_ID |
| Mobile link | https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID |
| Link with extras | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID&t=30s (the extra parts are ignored) |
| Only the video ID | VIDEO_ID |
VIDEO_ID is a placeholder. A real video ID is 11 characters long and made of letters, digits, hyphens and underscores, for example aBcD1234eF_ (a made-up example). A link to a whole channel or a search page does not point to one video, so it cannot be used.
YouTube Thumbnail Sizes
YouTube makes each thumbnail in several sizes. The tool shows the ones that exist for your video.
| Name | Size (pixels) | Shape | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maximum resolution | 1280 x 720 | 16:9 | The biggest and cleanest. Not available for every video |
| Standard | 640 x 480 | 4:3 | Often has black bars on a widescreen video |
| High | 480 x 360 | 4:3 | Often has black bars on a widescreen video |
| Medium | 320 x 180 | 16:9 | A small widescreen picture without bars |
| Small | 120 x 90 | 4:3 | Very small, mostly for tiny previews |
For most uses, take the 1280x720 version when it is there. If it is missing, the 640x480 picture is the next largest.
Why the Maximum Size is Missing and Why There Are Black Bars
The 1280x720 picture is not always there
YouTube has a 1280x720 picture only when the video, or the custom thumbnail that the creator uploaded, is of high enough resolution. Older videos, low-resolution videos and some others do not have it. The tool then shows only the sizes that exist, and you can use the largest one.
Black bars on 4:3 pictures
The 640x480, 480x360 and 120x90 versions have a 4:3 shape. A normal video is 16:9, so YouTube often fills the extra space at the top and bottom with black. If you need a clean widescreen picture, use 1280x720 when it exists, or the 320x180 picture if a small size is enough. You can also crop the black bars out in any image editor.
The Thumbnail Address Pattern
For developers and the curious: YouTube thumbnails are normal pictures at addresses that follow a pattern. Replace VIDEO_ID with the video's ID.
https://img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg (1280x720)
https://img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/sddefault.jpg (640x480)
https://img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/hqdefault.jpg (480x360)
https://img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/mqdefault.jpg (320x180)
https://img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/default.jpg (120x90)
This pattern is widely used, but it is not a promise from YouTube, so it can change over time.
What Can You Use It For?
| Use | Good to know |
|---|---|
| Checking your own video's thumbnail | Save a copy of the thumbnail you published |
| Design reference and research | Study layout, colors and text size. Take inspiration, not the picture itself |
| Saving a thumbnail for personal reference | Generally low risk, but keep it for yourself |
| Using someone else's thumbnail in your own video, advert or website | Needs permission from the owner |
| Reviews and commentary | Rules on using other people's pictures differ by country, and fair use or fair dealing is not guaranteed |
Copyright and Permission
A thumbnail is a picture that someone made, and the creator or the channel usually owns the copyright. The tool lets you save it, but saving a picture does not give you the right to reuse it.
- Personal reference is generally low risk.
- Reusing a thumbnail in your own video, advert, product, website or social media post can break copyright and YouTube's rules unless you have permission.
- Credit is not permission. Writing the channel's name under a picture does not replace asking.
- People in thumbnails have rights too, such as privacy and the right to control the use of their face.
- When in doubt, ask the owner, or make your own thumbnail.
This is general information and not legal advice.
Thumbnail Tips for Your Own Videos
- Use 1280x720 pixels with a 16:9 shape. YouTube suggests this size, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. Check YouTube Help for the current requirements.
- Make text large and short. The picture is shown small in search results and on phones.
- Use strong contrast between the text and the background.
- Keep one main subject. A busy picture is hard to read when it is small.
- Leave a margin. The video length label sits in a corner of the picture and can cover details.
- Match what the video is about. A thumbnail that misleads viewers can hurt trust.
- Compress big files. If your picture is too large to upload, use the Image Compressor & Resizer.
Common Problems and Fixes
- The link is not recognised: Copy the link again from the video page. Make sure it points to one video and not to a channel or a search page.
- No thumbnail for this video: The video may be private, deleted or restricted, or the ID may be wrong.
- The 1280x720 picture is missing: YouTube does not have that size for every video. Use the largest size that is shown.
- Black bars: They belong to the 4:3 versions. Use 1280x720, or crop the bars in an image editor.
- The picture looks small or blurry: You chose a small size. Choose a bigger one, or use the AI Image Upscaler on a copy.
- The image opens in a new tab: Press and hold it (phone) or right-click it (computer) and choose Save image.
- The picture is different from what I see on YouTube: Creators can change thumbnails at any time, and the tool shows the picture that YouTube serves right now.
Privacy
- The link you paste is read in your browser, and it is not sent to our server.
- Your browser loads the thumbnail pictures directly from YouTube's image servers, so YouTube can see those picture requests, as it would on any page that shows YouTube thumbnails. We do not host or store the pictures.
- We do not save the links you paste or the thumbnails you download.
- No signup, no account and no app install are needed.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I download a YouTube thumbnail?
Paste the link of a YouTube video into the box. The tool finds the video ID by itself and shows the thumbnails that exist for that video, each with its size. Click Download Image under the one you want.
Which YouTube links work?
Normal video links, short youtu.be links, Shorts links, embed links, live links and mobile links all work, and extra parts such as a start time are ignored. You can also paste just the 11-character video ID. A link to a whole channel or a search page does not point to one video, so it cannot be used.
Which thumbnail sizes will I see?
YouTube makes several sizes: 1280x720 (maximum resolution), 640x480 (standard), 480x360 (high), 320x180 (medium) and 120x90 (small). The tool shows the sizes that exist for your video, with the exact size under each picture.
Why is the maximum resolution thumbnail missing?
The 1280x720 version exists only when the video or its custom thumbnail is of high enough resolution. For some older, low-resolution or other videos, YouTube has no picture of that size. In that case, use the next size down.
Why do some thumbnails have black bars?
The 640x480, 480x360 and 120x90 versions have a 4:3 shape, so for a normal 16:9 video YouTube often adds black bars at the top and bottom. The 1280x720 and 320x180 versions are true 16:9 pictures without bars. For a clean picture, use 1280x720 when it is available.
What file format do I get?
The pictures are JPG files, as YouTube provides them. The tool does not edit them.
Can I use a downloaded thumbnail in my own work?
A thumbnail is a picture made by the creator or the channel, and it is usually protected by copyright. Saving one for personal reference is generally low risk. Reusing it in your own video, advert, product, website or social post without permission can break copyright and YouTube's rules, and giving credit is not the same as having permission. This is general information and not legal advice, so ask the owner when you are unsure.
Does this tool download videos?
No. It only downloads thumbnail pictures. It does not download videos, and it does not host any videos or images. All images are fetched directly from YouTube.
Does it work with Shorts, private videos or deleted videos?
Shorts links work, but the picture can have a different shape from a normal widescreen thumbnail. A private, deleted or restricted video may have no thumbnail that anyone can load, so the tool shows a message instead.
Why did the image open in a new tab instead of downloading?
Browsers do not always let a page save a picture from another website straight to your device. If the image opens in a new tab, press and hold it on a phone, or right-click it on a computer, and choose Save image.
Is the link I paste sent to your server?
No. The link is read in your browser and is not sent to our server. Your browser then loads the thumbnail pictures directly from YouTube's image servers, so YouTube can see those picture requests, just as it would when you open any page that shows YouTube thumbnails.
What is the best size for my own YouTube thumbnail?
YouTube suggests 1280x720 pixels with a 16:9 shape and a minimum width of 640 pixels. Use large, clear text, strong contrast and one main subject, because the picture is shown small in search results and on phones. Requirements can change, so check YouTube Help for the current rules.
Is this tool connected with YouTube?
No. WebToolsKit is not connected with, endorsed by or sponsored by YouTube or Google. YouTube is a trademark of Google LLC.
Is this YouTube thumbnail downloader free, and does it work on mobile?
Yes. The tool is free and needs no signup. It is designed for phone screens as well as desktop.
