Income Tax Calculator for FY 2026-27

This calculator compares the new and old tax regimes side by side for FY 2026-27 (Tax Year 2026-27). From 1 April 2026, the Income-tax Act, 2025 applies, and it uses "Tax Year" in place of "Assessment Year". The slab rates are the same as in FY 2025-26, so you can use this tool for both years.

Enter your gross income, tick if you are a salaried employee, and add your old-regime deductions such as 80C and 80D. The tool shows taxable income, tax with 4% cess for each regime, and which one saves more. Section numbers changed in the new Act (for example, the rebate is now in Section 157, earlier 87A), but the deductions work in the same way.

New Regime Rules for FY 2026-27

  • Standard deduction of ₹75,000 for salaried employees.
  • Rebate of up to ₹60,000, so taxable income up to ₹12 lakh pays no tax. For a salaried person, that means a salary of up to ₹12.75 lakh.
  • For income slightly above ₹12 lakh, marginal relief keeps the tax from rising more than your extra income.
  • The rebate does not apply to special-rate income such as capital gains.
  • A 4% health and education cess is added to the tax.

₹12.75 lakh₹0Taxable income is ₹12 lakh, so the full rebate applies.
₹15 lakh₹97,500Taxable income ₹14.25 lakh. Tax ₹93,750 plus 4% cess.
₹20 lakh₹1,92,400Taxable income ₹19.25 lakh. Tax ₹1,85,000 plus 4% cess.

Surcharge (for very high incomes) is not included in these examples.

Old vs New Regime: When Does the Old Regime Win?

For a salaried person below 60 with a gross salary of ₹12 lakh and ₹2 lakh of deductions (80C and 80D), the old regime tax is about ₹1,06,600, while the new regime tax is ₹0. The new regime is better here.

At a gross salary of ₹20 lakh, the new regime tax is ₹1,92,400. The old regime gives a lower tax only if your total deductions (apart from the ₹50,000 standard deduction) are more than about ₹7.1 lakh. This usually needs a mix of HRA, 80C, home loan interest, 80D and similar claims.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free in the new regime?

Yes, if your taxable income is up to ₹12 lakh, the rebate of up to ₹60,000 makes the tax zero. A salaried person gets a standard deduction of ₹75,000, so a salary of up to ₹12.75 lakh pays no tax. The rebate does not apply to special-rate income such as capital gains.

2. Which regime is better for me?

It depends on your income and deductions. The new regime has lower rates and fewer deductions. The old regime allows deductions such as HRA, 80C, 80D and home loan interest. Enter your figures in the calculator to compare both.

3. Which tax year does this calculator use?

It uses FY 2026-27 (Tax Year 2026-27). The slab rates are the same as FY 2025-26, so the results also apply to that year.
