What is a Time Zone Converter?
A time zone converter tells you what time it is in another part of the world when you know the time in your own. If a meeting is at 9:00 AM in India, what time is that in London, New York, Dubai or Sydney? The answer depends on each place's distance from UTC and on whether daylight saving time is in use on that date. This tool does the math for you and shows every result side by side.
It is useful for planning calls with colleagues or clients in other countries, joining webinars and live events, checking match or release times, booking flights and keeping in touch with family abroad.
How to Use the Time Zone Converter
- Choose the date and time you want to convert, or click Now to load the current time.
- Select your time zone in the From dropdown. You can search by typing, for example Kolkata.
- Add the time zones you want from the searchable list. Each one appears as its own card.
- Read the converted time, the day difference (Yesterday, Today or Tomorrow) and the UTC offset on each card.
- Click Copy on a card to copy that time, or use Swap to switch the direction of the conversion.
There is no Convert button. The cards update as soon as you change the date, the time or any time zone.
What Each Card Shows
| Item | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Converted time and date | The local time and date in that time zone for the moment you picked |
| Yesterday / Today / Tomorrow | How that date compares with the date in your From time zone |
| UTC offset | How far that time zone is ahead of or behind UTC on that date, for example UTC+05:30 or UTC-04:00 |
The UTC offset can change during the year in places that use daylight saving time, so it is always shown for the date you selected.
Time Zone Conversion Example
Suppose a call is set for 9:00 AM India time (IST, UTC+5:30). Here is what the same moment looks like elsewhere in winter and in summer.
| Time zone | On 15 January | On 15 July |
|---|---|---|
| India (Asia/Kolkata) | 9:00 AM, Today | 9:00 AM, Today |
| UTC | 3:30 AM, Today | 3:30 AM, Today |
| London (Europe/London) | 3:30 AM, Today (UTC+0) | 4:30 AM, Today (UTC+1) |
| New York (America/New_York) | 10:30 PM, Yesterday (UTC-5) | 11:30 PM, Yesterday (UTC-4) |
| Dubai (Asia/Dubai) | 7:30 AM, Today (UTC+4) | 7:30 AM, Today (UTC+4) |
| Tokyo (Asia/Tokyo) | 12:30 PM, Today (UTC+9) | 12:30 PM, Today (UTC+9) |
| Sydney (Australia/Sydney) | 2:30 PM, Today (UTC+11) | 1:30 PM, Today (UTC+10) |
Notice that London, New York and Sydney change by one hour between the two dates, because they use daylight saving time. India, Dubai and Tokyo stay the same all year.
Time Difference from India (IST)
This table shows the local time in other places when it is 12:00 noon in India. Where a place uses daylight saving time, both the winter (standard) and summer values are shown.
| Place | Standard time | Summer time (DST) |
|---|---|---|
| UTC | 6:30 AM | No change |
| London | 6:30 AM (GMT) | 7:30 AM (BST) |
| Paris, Berlin | 7:30 AM (CET) | 8:30 AM (CEST) |
| Dubai | 10:30 AM | No change |
| Singapore | 2:30 PM | No change |
| Tokyo | 3:30 PM | No change |
| Sydney | 4:30 PM (AEST) | 5:30 PM (AEDT) |
| New York | 1:30 AM (EST) | 2:30 AM (EDT) |
| Los Angeles | 10:30 PM, previous day (PST) | 11:30 PM, previous day (PDT) |
The dates when daylight saving time starts and ends differ between countries, so use the converter with your exact date for important plans.

How Daylight Saving Time (DST) Works
Some countries move their clocks forward by one hour in the warmer months and back again in the colder months. This is called daylight saving time, or summer time. It means the gap between two places can change twice a year, even though neither place changed its basic time zone.
- United States: Clocks go forward on the second Sunday of March and back on the first Sunday of November.
- United Kingdom and most of Europe: Clocks go forward on the last Sunday of March and back on the last Sunday of October.
- Australia (for example Sydney): Summer is in the southern hemisphere, so clocks go forward on the first Sunday of October and back on the first Sunday of April.
- India, Japan, UAE, Singapore: No daylight saving time, so the offset stays the same all year.
These rules are correct at the time of writing but can change, and not every place within a country follows them. The converter works out the offset for the exact date you pick, so you do not need to remember any of this.
Clock changes can create unusual local times
When clocks go forward, one hour is skipped, so some local times such as 2:30 AM on that morning do not exist. When clocks go back, one hour is repeated, so the same local time happens twice. If your meeting falls near a clock change, check the result carefully and confirm the time with the other person.
UTC vs GMT
| Term | What it is |
|---|---|
| UTC | The world time standard used in computing, aviation and science. It never changes for daylight saving. |
| GMT | A time zone name with the same clock time as UTC. The UK uses it in winter. |
| BST | British Summer Time, UTC+1, used in the UK in summer. |
For everyday planning, UTC and GMT show the same time. Technical systems, servers and logs usually use UTC.
Why Are There More Than 400 Time Zones?
The world has about 24 hours of offset, but the time zone list has more than 400 entries. This is because the list follows the IANA time zone database, which has a separate entry for each region with its own history of clock changes. Names look like Asia/Kolkata or America/New_York, written as continent or region, then a major city. Two cities can have the same offset today but different past rules or different daylight saving dates, so they are listed separately.
India uses Asia/Kolkata. You may also see the older name Asia/Calcutta, which refers to the same time zone.
Half-Hour and 45-Minute Time Zones
Not every time zone is a whole number of hours away from UTC.
- India: UTC+5:30
- Nepal: UTC+5:45
- Newfoundland (Canada): UTC-3:30 in winter
- Adelaide (Australia): UTC+9:30 in winter
The UTC offset shown on each card includes the minutes, so these places are converted correctly.
Tips for Scheduling Meetings Across Time Zones
- Convert for the exact date. A call next month may fall after a clock change that has not happened yet.
- Share the time zone in writing. Write the time with its zone, for example 9:00 AM IST, and add the other person's local time as well.
- Check the day, not only the hour. The Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow label on each card helps you catch a date mismatch.
- Look for overlap in working hours. For example, 8:00 PM in India is 10:30 AM in New York during summer time and 9:30 AM during winter time.
- Rotate inconvenient slots. If one side always joins very early or very late, take turns.
- Use UTC for technical events. Releases, deadlines and maintenance windows are clearest in UTC.
Common Time Zone Mistakes
- Confusing abbreviations: IST can mean India Standard Time, Irish Summer Time or Israel Standard Time. CST can mean US Central, China or Cuba Standard Time. Use the full time zone name when it matters.
- Forgetting daylight saving time: The gap between India and the US is one hour different in summer and winter.
- Using today's offset for a future date: The offset on a future date can be different from the offset today.
- Mixing up AM and PM: Check 12:00 AM (midnight) and 12:00 PM (noon) carefully.
- Ignoring the date change: A late evening in India can be the same morning in the US, and a morning in India can be the previous evening there.
- Assuming a country has one time zone: Large countries such as the United States, Canada, Russia, Brazil and Australia have several.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert time from one time zone to another?
Pick the date and time, choose the From time zone, then add the time zones you want from the searchable list. Each time zone gets its own card with the converted time, the day difference and the UTC offset. Everything updates as soon as you change something, so there is no Convert button.
Does the converter handle daylight saving time (DST)?
Yes. The tool uses the rules of each time zone for the exact date you pick, so the offset on a card changes by itself when a place is on summer time. For example, New York is UTC-5 in winter and UTC-4 in summer, and you will see the right one for your date.
What do Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow mean on the cards?
They show how the date in that time zone compares with the date in your From time zone. If it is 9:00 AM in India on 15 January, New York shows 10:30 PM and Yesterday, because it is still the previous evening there.
What is the time difference between India (IST) and the US?
India is 9 hours 30 minutes ahead of New York during summer time (EDT) and 10 hours 30 minutes ahead during winter time (EST). India is 12 hours 30 minutes ahead of Los Angeles during PDT and 13 hours 30 minutes ahead during PST. India has no daylight saving time, so the gap changes when the US changes its clocks. Always convert for the exact date.
What is the difference between UTC and GMT?
UTC is the world time standard used in computing and aviation. GMT is the name of a time zone that shows the same clock time as UTC. The United Kingdom uses GMT in winter and British Summer Time (BST, UTC+1) in summer.
Why are there more than 400 time zones in the list?
The list follows the IANA time zone database, which has one entry for each region with its own history of clock changes, such as Asia/Kolkata or America/New_York. Many regions use the same offset today, but they are listed separately because their daylight saving rules or past changes differ.
How do I find my time zone in the list?
Type part of a city or region name in the search box, such as Kolkata, New York or Tokyo. Time zones are named after a major city or region in the IANA list, so a smaller town may be listed under a larger city nearby. India uses Asia/Kolkata, which was formerly written as Asia/Calcutta.
What does the Now button do?
It loads the current date and time from your device clock. If your device clock is wrong, Now will be wrong too.
Can I trust the result for a meeting far in the future?
For most dates, yes. Governments sometimes change their daylight saving rules at short notice, so for an important meeting months or years ahead, check the time again close to the date and confirm it with the other person.
Are my dates and time zones sent to a server?
No. The conversion is done in your browser using JavaScript. The dates, times and time zones you choose are not sent to our server.
Is this time zone converter free, and does it work on mobile?
Yes. The tool is free and needs no signup. It is designed for phone screens as well as desktop, and it supports dark mode.
