JSON vs XML
| Feature | JSON | XML |
|---|---|---|
| Data types | string, number, boolean, null, array, object |
everything is text |
| Attributes | not available | supported |
| Comments | not allowed | allowed |
| Root | any value | exactly one root element |
Things to Know
- XML needs one root element. A JSON array at the top level must be wrapped in a root tag.
- XML tag names cannot contain spaces or start with a digit, so such JSON keys may need renaming.
- XML attributes and text nodes have no direct JSON equivalent, so XML to JSON may represent them differently.
- Characters like <,> and & must be escaped in XML.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q. How are JSON arrays converted to XML? Each array item usually becomes a repeated XML element with the same tag name.
Q. Why does my JSON fail to convert? Check that it is valid JSON, and that keys can be used as XML tag names (no spaces, not starting with a digit).
Q. Does XML to JSON keep attributes? Attributes and text can be represented differently depending on the converter, so check the output for your use case.
Q. Is my data safe? The conversion runs in your browser using JavaScript, and your input is not sent to our server.
