What is a Unix Timestamp?

A Unix timestamp, also called Epoch time, is the number of seconds that have passed since January 1, 1970 00:00:00 UTC (the Unix Epoch). Many systems also use milliseconds, which is the same value multiplied by 1000. Because it is a single integer, it is independent of timezones and easy to store, compare and sort. Databases like MySQL and MongoDB, APIs, logs and JWT tokens all use it.

Example: 1727074800 is 23 September 2024, 07:00:00 UTC, which is 12:30:00 IST.

What This Tool Does

  • Converts a Unix timestamp (seconds or milliseconds) to a readable date.
  • Converts a date and time to a Unix timestamp in seconds or milliseconds.
  • Shows local time, UTC/GMT, ISO 8601 and relative time (for example, 2 hours ago).
  • Shows the live current Unix timestamp, updated every second.
  • Supports Local (browser), UTC/GMT and IST (Asia/Kolkata, UTC+5:30).
  • Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and it works offline after the page loads.

Seconds vs Milliseconds

Get the Current Unix Timestamp in Code

Language Code (seconds)
JavaScriptMath.floor(Date.now() / 1000)
Pythonint(time.time())
PHPtime()
JavaInstant.now().getEpochSecond()
C#DateTimeOffset.UtcNow.ToUnixTimeSeconds()
MySQLSELECT UNIX_TIMESTAMP();
Linux shelldate +%s

Unix Timestamp in Excel

Task Formula (cell A1)
Timestamp to Excel date (UTC)=(A1/86400)+DATE(1970,1,1)
Excel date to timestamp (UTC)=(A1-DATE(1970,1,1))*86400

Format the result cell as Date/Time. Excel itself has no timezone, so add or subtract hours for your timezone, for example 5.5/24 for IST.

How to Convert a Unix Timestamp to a Date

  1. Enter your 10-digit or 13-digit timestamp in the input box.
  2. Select Seconds or Milliseconds.
  3. Click Convert to Date to see local time, UTC, ISO 8601 and relative time.

How to Convert a Date to a Unix Timestamp

  1. Pick the date and time.
  2. Choose the timezone: Local, UTC/GMT or IST.
  3. Choose the output unit: Seconds or Milliseconds.
  4. Click Convert to Timestamp and copy the result.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between seconds and milliseconds timestamps?

A seconds timestamp has 10 digits (for example 1727074800) and is used by PHP, MySQL and Python. A milliseconds timestamp has 13 digits (for example 1727074800000) and is used by JavaScript and Java. Select the correct unit before converting.

Is a Unix timestamp the same in every timezone?

Yes. A Unix timestamp always counts from the UTC epoch, so it is the same worldwide. Only the human-readable date and time change with the timezone.

How do I get the current Unix timestamp?

The top of this page shows the live current timestamp, and you can copy it with one click. In JavaScript you can use Math.floor(Date.now() / 1000).

Does it support Indian Standard Time (IST)?

Yes. It supports Local (browser), UTC/GMT and IST (Asia/Kolkata, UTC+5:30). When converting a date to a timestamp, select IST to get the timestamp for Indian Standard Time.

Do Unix timestamps include leap seconds?

No. Unix time ignores leap seconds and treats every day as exactly 86,400 seconds.

What is the Year 2038 problem?

Systems that store the timestamp as a signed 32-bit integer can only count up to 2147483647, which is 19 January 2038, 03:14:07 UTC. After that the value overflows. Modern 64-bit systems are not affected.

Is my data private?

Yes. All conversions run locally in your browser, and no timestamp or date is sent to any server.
