What is a Typing Speed Test?
A typing speed test measures how fast and how accurately you can type. You are given a paragraph, you type it, and the test counts your words per minute (WPM) and the percentage of letters you typed correctly. It is a quick way to know where you stand, to track progress over time and to find out which letters give you trouble.
Typing speed matters for office work, data entry, writing, coding, chat support and exams where you type answers. A better speed saves time every day, and good accuracy saves the time you would spend fixing mistakes.
How to Take the Typing Test
- Sit comfortably, put your hands on the keyboard and make sure Caps Lock is off.
- Read the first few words of the paragraph shown on the screen.
- Start typing. The 60 second timer begins automatically with your first letter.
- Watch the colours: green means correct, red means wrong.
- Keep going until the time ends or you finish the paragraph.
- Read your WPM, accuracy and total errors, and check the breakdown of the letters you got wrong.
- Press Restart to try again with a new text.
What You See on the Page
| Item | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Paragraph | The English text you need to type |
| Green letters | Letters you typed correctly |
| Red letters | Letters you typed wrong |
| Timer | Counts down from 60 seconds and starts when you type the first letter |
| Caps Lock warning | Appears when Caps Lock is on, so you can turn it off |
| WPM | Your typing speed in words per minute |
| Accuracy | The percentage of typed letters that were correct |
| Total errors | The number of letters you typed wrong |
| Letter breakdown | A character-by-character view of which letters were wrong |
| Restart | Loads a new text and starts a fresh test |
How WPM is Calculated
In typing tests, one "word" is counted as 5 characters, including spaces. This makes the score fair, because a long word like "understanding" and a short word like "it" are not treated as one word each. The test counts your correctly typed characters, divides them by 5 to get the number of words and then divides by the minutes used.
WPM = (correct characters / 5) / minutes
| Correct characters in 60 seconds | Calculation | WPM |
|---|---|---|
| 150 | 150 / 5 = 30 words in 1 minute | 30 |
| 200 | 200 / 5 = 40 words in 1 minute | 40 |
| 300 | 300 / 5 = 60 words in 1 minute | 60 |
| 400 | 400 / 5 = 80 words in 1 minute | 80 |
Other tests may use slightly different rules, for example by counting all typed characters or by subtracting errors, so scores from different sites are not always directly comparable.
How Accuracy is Calculated
Accuracy is the share of the characters you typed that were correct.
Accuracy (%) = (correct characters / total typed characters) x 100
| Typed characters | Wrong characters | Calculation | Accuracy |
|---|---|---|---|
| 250 | 0 | 250 / 250 | 100% |
| 250 | 10 | 240 / 250 | 96% |
| 250 | 25 | 225 / 250 | 90% |
| 250 | 50 | 200 / 250 | 80% |
What is a Good Typing Speed?
| Speed (WPM) | Level |
|---|---|
| Below 30 | Beginner |
| 30 to 45 | Average |
| 45 to 60 | Good |
| 60 to 80 | Fast |
| Above 80 | Very fast |
These ranges are a rough guide, not an official standard. What counts as good depends on the job. Many data entry and typing jobs ask for a minimum speed together with high accuracy, so check the requirement of the job or exam you are preparing for. Fast typing with many mistakes is usually worse than slightly slower typing with few mistakes.
Use the Letter Breakdown to Improve
After the test, the breakdown shows which letters you typed wrong. Look for patterns.
- The same letter again and again: You may be using the wrong finger for that key. Practise it slowly.
- Neighbouring letters mixed up: Your fingers may be moving too fast. Slow down a little and aim for clean typing first.
- Capital letters or punctuation wrong: Practise the Shift key and the keys at the edge of the keyboard.
- Mistakes late in the test: You may be getting tired or rushing at the end. Short, regular practice helps more than one long session.
Tips to Type Faster and More Accurately
- Learn touch typing. Keep your fingers on the home row (A S D F and J K L ;) and look at the screen, not at the keys.
- Accuracy first, speed second. Speed comes naturally once your fingers know where the keys are.
- Sit well. Keep your back straight, your wrists relaxed and the screen at eye level.
- Read a little ahead. Let your eyes stay a few words in front of your fingers.
- Keep a steady rhythm. Even typing is faster in the long run than bursts followed by corrections.
- Practise a little every day. Ten minutes daily is better than one hour once a week.
- Do not rush after a mistake. Stay calm and keep going.
- Use a comfortable keyboard that you are used to.
Caps Lock Warning
If Caps Lock is on while you type, every letter comes out as a capital and the test marks those letters wrong. That can cost you many errors in a few seconds. When the test detects that Caps Lock is on, it shows a warning so you can turn it off and keep your accuracy.
Good to Know
- The timer starts when you type. You do not need to press a start button. Be ready before you press the first key.
- The test ends in two ways. When 60 seconds are over, or when you finish the whole paragraph.
- Different paragraphs. The text changes when you press Restart, and you may see the same paragraph again after several tests.
- English text only. The paragraphs are in English.
- Results vary. Your score depends on the text, your keyboard, how warmed up you are and how you feel that day. Take the test a few times and look at your average.
- On a phone, typing on a touch keyboard is usually slower, and autocorrect on some phones can change your text. For a score that you can compare with a computer, use a physical keyboard.
Common Mistakes During a Typing Test
- Looking at the keyboard: This slows you down and breaks your rhythm.
- Rushing at the start: A fast start with many errors usually leads to a lower final score.
- Leaving Caps Lock on: Check for the warning before you begin.
- Ignoring the red letters: The red letters show you what to practise.
- Comparing scores from different sites: Tests use different texts and rules, so numbers are not always directly comparable.
- Judging yourself on one test: One result can be better or worse than your usual level.
Privacy

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I take the typing speed test?
Look at the paragraph on the screen and start typing it. The 60 second timer starts by itself when you type the first letter. Correct letters turn green and wrong letters turn red. When the time is up, or when you finish the paragraph, you see your WPM, accuracy and total errors.
What does WPM mean and how is it calculated?
WPM means words per minute. In typing tests, a word is counted as 5 characters, including spaces, so that long and short words are treated the same. The test counts your correctly typed characters, divides by 5 and then by the minutes used. For example, 300 correct characters in 60 seconds is 60 words in one minute, which is 60 WPM.
How is accuracy calculated?
Accuracy is the share of the characters you typed that were correct, shown as a percentage. For example, if you typed 250 characters and 10 were wrong, 240 out of 250 were correct, so your accuracy is 96 percent.
What is a good typing speed?
As a rough guide, under 30 WPM is a beginner speed, 30 to 45 WPM is about average, 45 to 60 WPM is good, 60 to 80 WPM is fast and above 80 WPM is very fast. These ranges are only a general guide and not an official standard. A good result also needs good accuracy, because typing fast with many mistakes slows down real work.
When does the timer start?
The timer starts automatically when you type your first letter, so you do not need to press a start button. The default time is 60 seconds. The test ends when the time runs out or when you finish the paragraph.
What do the green and red letters mean?
A letter turns green when you typed it correctly and red when you typed it wrong. This gives you instant feedback while you type, so you can see your mistakes as they happen.
What does the result screen show?
It shows three main numbers: your WPM (words per minute), your accuracy in percent and your total errors. Below them, a character-by-character breakdown shows which letters you typed wrong. A Restart button loads a new text for another try.
How can the letter breakdown help me improve?
The breakdown shows which letters you got wrong. If the same letters or letter pairs appear again and again, practise those on purpose, slowly and with the correct finger. Fixing a few weak keys often improves accuracy faster than trying to type everything quicker.
Will I get the same text every time?
Each time you press Restart, the test picks a paragraph from a collection of different English texts. Because the collection is limited, you may see the same paragraph again after several tests.
Why does the test show a Caps Lock warning?
If Caps Lock is on, every letter you type comes out as a capital, and the test marks those letters as wrong. The warning tells you to turn Caps Lock off before it costs you accuracy.
Can I take the test on my phone?
Yes, the page works on phones, but typing on a touch keyboard is usually slower than on a physical keyboard. Autocorrect and suggestions on some phones can also change what you type. For a result you can compare with a computer, use a physical keyboard.
Is what I type sent to a server?
No. The test runs in your browser using JavaScript, and what you type is not sent to our server.
Is this typing speed test free?
Yes. The test is free and needs no signup or app install.
