What Is an Inflation Calculator?

Inflation is the rate at which prices rise over time. A rise of 6% a year means that something that costs ₹100 today will cost ₹106 next year. An inflation calculator shows two things: how much more things will cost in the future, and how much less your money will buy.

It uses the compound formula Future Value = Present Value × (1 + inflation rate)years. It works with INR, USD, EUR and GBP, and shows a year-by-year table, total inflation and the purchasing power lost.

How Does Inflation Affect Your Money?

Inflation slowly reduces what your savings can buy. If inflation is 6% a year, ₹10 lakh kept idle today will have the purchasing power of only about ₹5.58 lakh after 10 years. This is why it helps to compare the return on your investments with inflation. For a quick plan, try the SIP Calculator, PPF Calculator or FD Calculator.

Inflation in India

The Reserve Bank of India targets 4% inflation, with an acceptable band of 2% to 6%. Actual inflation changes every year. For example, India's CPI inflation was 6.83% in August 2023 and 4.82% in August 2026 (MoSPI data). Because of this, a single average rate is only an estimate. For exact past values, use the official CPI data from MoSPI.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is inflation and how is it calculated?

Inflation is the rate at which prices rise over time. Future Value = Present Value × (1 + rate)^years. For example, ₹100 at 6.5% inflation for 10 years becomes 100 × (1.065)^10 = ₹187.71. You would need ₹187.71 after 10 years to buy what ₹100 buys today.

2. What is the inflation rate in India?

The RBI targets 4% with a band of 2% to 6%. India's CPI inflation was 4.82% in August 2026. The rate changes every month, so check the latest MoSPI release.

3. What is purchasing power loss?

It shows how much less your money can buy. At 6% inflation, ₹100 today buys only what ₹55.84 would buy today after 10 years, so about 44.2% of its purchasing power is lost.

4. Is this calculator accurate?

It uses the standard compound formula with the rate you enter. Real inflation changes every year, so the result is an estimate. For exact past values, use official CPI data.

5. How do I find what ₹100 in 2000 is worth today?

Enter 100 as the amount, 2000 as the start year, the current year as the end year, choose INR and enter an average inflation rate. The result depends on the rate you choose.

6. What is real return?

It is your return after inflation: (1 + return) ÷ (1 + inflation) − 1. An FD paying 7% when inflation is 5% gives a real return of about 1.9%.

7. Is my data private?

The calculation runs in your browser and your amounts are not sent to our server.
