What is a Background Remover?
A background remover finds the main subject in a photo, such as a person or a product, and cuts away everything behind it. The result is a cutout of your subject with a transparent background. You can keep it transparent, or place the subject on a new background such as plain white, a color, a gradient or another image.
This tool does the work in your browser. You add a photo, click one button, check the result and download it. If an edge needs fixing, use the brushes to erase or restore small areas.
How to Remove the Background from an Image
- Upload a photo, drag it into the box, take a photo with your phone camera, or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V.
- Click Remove Background and wait for the progress bar to finish.
- Move the before and after slider to compare. The checkerboard pattern shows the transparent area.
- Choose what goes behind your subject: transparent, a solid color, a gradient, a blur or your own image.
- Fix any rough edges with the Restore and Erase brushes.
- Download the result as PNG, WEBP or JPG.
The first time you use the tool, the browser has to download the model that removes the background, so the first run takes longer. Later runs are faster.
Background Options
| Option | What it does | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Transparent | Keeps only your subject, with no background | Logos, stickers, design work |
| Solid color | Fills the background with one color | Profile photos, ID-style photos, product photos |
| Gradient | Fills the background with two blended colors | Posters, banners, thumbnails |
| Blur | Keeps the original background but blurs it | Portraits with a soft background |
| Your own image | Places the subject on another picture | Creative edits, collages |
| Shadow | Adds a soft shadow under the subject | Product photos on white |
Remove Background for Product Photos
Online shops usually want a clean product photo on a plain white background. To make one, remove the background, choose a white solid color, center the product and leave a small margin around it. A square image such as 1000 by 1000 pixels is a common choice. Image rules differ by shopping site, so check the guidelines of the site where you plan to upload.
- Take the original photo in good light, with the product clearly separate from the surface.
- Use a plain surface or wall behind the product when you can, since it makes the cutout cleaner.
- Add a soft shadow if the product looks like it is floating.
- Zoom in and check the edges before you download.
Change the Background of a Passport-Style Photo
You can replace the background of a portrait with white, blue or another plain color. Rules for passport, visa and ID photos are different for every country and document. They cover the size, the color, the head position, the expression and the background. Always read the official requirements for your document and check your final photo against them. This tool changes the background of a photo, but it cannot guarantee that an office or portal will accept it.
PNG vs JPG vs WEBP for the Result
| Format | Transparency | File size | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| PNG | Yes | Larger | Transparent cutouts, logos, stickers |
| WEBP | Yes | Smaller | Websites that support WEBP |
| JPG | No | Smallest | Photos with a solid color background |
If you pick JPG, the empty area is filled with the background color you choose, because JPG cannot store transparency.
Which Photos Work Best?
| Works well | Can be difficult |
|---|---|
| Portraits with one clear person | Fine hair, fur and wispy edges |
| Products on a plain surface | Glass, plastic bottles and other transparent objects |
| Subject and background in different colors | Subject and background in similar colors |
| Sharp, well-lit, high-resolution photos | Blurry, dark or very small photos |
| One main subject | Many objects, or thin parts such as fences and nets |
No automatic tool is perfect. On difficult photos the result may need a few brush fixes.
Fix Edges with the Brushes
- Restore brush: Paint over a part that was removed by mistake to bring it back.
- Erase brush: Paint over leftover background to remove it.
- Brush size: Use a small brush near fine details and a large one for big areas.
- Edge smoothing: Softens jagged or rough outlines.
- Edge shift: Moves the outline slightly inward or outward. Use it to remove a thin light outline around the subject.
- Zoom and undo: Zoom in to work on small areas, and undo if you go too far.
Tips for a Cleaner Cutout
- Use a high-resolution photo: More detail gives cleaner edges.
- Use good, even light: Avoid harsh shadows and glare.
- Keep the subject separate from the background: A different color or some distance between them helps a lot.
- Avoid cluttered backgrounds: A plain wall or table gives the best result.
- Check at 100% zoom: Look closely at hair, corners and thin parts before you download.
- Pick the format that fits: PNG for transparency, JPG for a final image with a solid background.
Image Formats and Size
- Supported formats: JPG, PNG and WEBP.
- Maximum size: 10 MB per image.
- iPhone HEIC photos: Convert them to JPG first, because many browsers cannot open HEIC.
- Very large images: They are scaled down for processing so that your browser does not run out of memory.
Common Problems and Fixes
- Part of the subject is missing: Use the Restore brush to bring it back.
- Some background is left: Use the Erase brush on those areas.
- A light outline shows around the subject: Use edge shift to move the outline inward a little, and add edge smoothing.
- No subject was found: Try a photo where the main subject is larger and clearer.
- It is slow or the page runs out of memory: Use a smaller image, close other tabs and try again.
- The first run is slow: The model downloads on first use. Later runs are faster.
- JPG has a white background, not transparent: JPG cannot be transparent. Download as PNG or WEBP.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I remove the background from an image?
Upload your photo, drag it into the box or paste it with Ctrl+V, then click Remove Background. When the progress finishes, check the result on the preview, fix any edges with the brushes if needed, and download it as a PNG.
How do I get a transparent background?
Remove the background and download the result as a PNG or WEBP file. Both formats keep transparency. The checkerboard pattern in the preview shows the transparent area.
Why is my JPG not transparent?
The JPG format does not support transparency. If you download as JPG, the tool fills the empty area with a color you choose, such as white. Choose PNG or WEBP if you need a transparent background.
How can I put a white background behind my product photo?
Remove the background, choose Solid color and select white, then download the image. Use the product photo preset to place the item in the center of a square canvas with some margin. Check the image rules of the shopping site where you plan to upload it.
Can I use this for passport or ID photos?
You can change the background color of a photo, for example to white or blue. Requirements for size, color, head position and background differ by country and by document, so always check the official rules for your document. The result of this tool is not guaranteed to be accepted.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. The background is removed in your browser, and your photo is not sent to our server. The first time you use the tool, the browser downloads the model files that do the work. Still, only use photos that you have the right to edit.
Why does the first run take longer?
On the first run your browser has to download the model that removes the background. After that it is stored in your browser, so later runs start faster. Speed also depends on your device and the size of the image.
How do I fix rough edges, missing parts or leftover background?
Use the Restore brush to bring back parts that were removed by mistake and the Erase brush to remove leftover background. Edge smoothing softens jagged edges, and edge shift moves the outline slightly in or out to remove a light outline around the subject.
Which images give the best result?
Clear photos with a single main subject that stands out from the background work best, such as portraits and products on a plain surface. Fine hair, fur, glass, transparent objects and subjects with a color similar to the background are harder, and may need brush fixes.
Which image formats and sizes are supported?
JPG, PNG and WEBP images are supported, up to 10 MB each. If your phone saves photos in HEIC format, convert the photo to JPG first. Very large images are scaled down for processing so that your browser does not run out of memory.
Is this background remover free?
Yes. The tool is free and needs no signup. It runs in your browser using JavaScript.
