What is a Password Generator?

A password generator creates random passwords that are hard to guess. Weak passwords such as "123456", "password" or a name with a birth year can be cracked in seconds. A random password of sufficient length is much harder to crack, so it helps protect accounts like email, social media, banking and UPI apps. Because strong passwords are hard to remember, store them in a password manager.

Character types you can include

TypeCharactersCount
UppercaseA-Z26
Lowercasea-z26
Numbers0-910
Symbols! # $ %4

The more character types you include, and the longer the password, the more combinations an attacker has to try.

How to Use the Password Generator

  1. Set the Length. We recommend at least 16 characters for important accounts.
  2. Choose what to include: uppercase (A-Z), lowercase (a-z), numbers (0-9) and symbols (! # $ %). Some websites require specific types, so select the ones your site needs.
  3. Click Generate to create a new random password.
  4. Click Copy, then paste it into your password manager or the sign-up form.
  5. Click Generate again whenever you need a different password. Use a unique password for every account.

How Strong Is Your Password?

Password strength is measured in bits of entropy: Length × log2(number of possible characters). Each extra bit doubles the number of guesses needed. These values apply to passwords generated randomly, like the ones from this tool.

Length Letters + numbers (62 characters) Letters + numbers + symbols (94 characters)
4about 24 bitsabout 26 bits
8about 48 bitsabout 52 bits
12about 71 bitsabout 79 bits
16about 95 bitsabout 105 bits
20about 119 bitsabout 131 bits

Length adds more strength than extra symbols. Going from 8 to 16 characters adds far more bits than adding symbols to an 8-character password.

Recommended length

Account typeRecommended length
Low-risk accounts (forums, newsletters)12 or more characters
Social media, shopping, general accounts16 characters
Email, banking, UPI apps, crypto wallets, password manager16 to 20 or more characters, plus 2-factor authentication

What Makes a Password Strong?

  • Length comes first. NIST's current guidelines recommend at least 15 characters for passwords used alone, and they no longer ask for forced mixes of character types. Longer is stronger.
  • Randomness. Do not use your name, date of birth, mobile number or common words.
  • Unique for every site. If one site is hacked, a reused password gives attackers access to your other accounts.
  • Mix of character types. This still helps, and many websites require it.

Why Use the WebToolsKit Password Generator?

  • Generated in your browser: passwords are created locally using window.crypto.getRandomValues(), a cryptographically secure random generator, and are not sent to our server.
  • Not Math.random(): we do not use the weaker Math.random() function.
  • Works offline: after the page loads, you can disconnect from the internet and it still works.
  • Free: no signup, email or payment.

Tips to Keep Your Passwords Safe

DoDon't
Save passwords in a trusted password manager such as Bitwarden, 1Password or Google Password Manager.Don't share passwords on WhatsApp or email, or keep them in plain notes.
Turn on 2-factor authentication (2FA) for email, banking, Instagram and Facebook.Don't reuse one password on several sites.
Change a password if the site reports a breach or you suspect someone else knows it.Don't change passwords on a fixed schedule just for the sake of it.
Check the website address before you log in.Don't enter your password on links received in messages or emails.

A strong password does not protect you from phishing, where you enter it on a fake site, or from a data breach at the website itself. That is why unique passwords and 2FA matter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the generated passwords saved by you?

No. Passwords are generated in your browser and are not sent to or stored on our server. They disappear when you refresh the page.

What is the best password length?

Longer is better. We recommend 16 characters for most accounts and 16 to 20 or more for email, banking, UPI and crypto. NIST recommends a minimum of 15 characters for passwords used on their own.

Do I need symbols in my password?

Length matters more than symbols. Include symbols when a website requires them, or when you want extra strength at the same length.

How often should I change my password?

You do not need to change a strong, unique password on a fixed schedule. Change it if a website reports a breach, if you think someone knows it, or if you used it on a device you do not trust.

Can I generate a pronounceable password?

This tool generates fully random passwords. A passphrase made of several random words is also strong and easier to remember, but it must be long and chosen randomly, not from a quote or a phrase you know.

Is it safe to use an online password generator?

This generator runs in your browser and does not send the password to a server. As a good habit, copy the password straight into your password manager and do not share it.
