What is a HEIC to JPG Converter?

A HEIC to JPG converter changes photos from the HEIC format into the JPG format. HEIC is what iPhones and iPads use to save photos by default. It works well on Apple devices, but many other devices and websites cannot open it. JPG is the format that nearly every phone, computer, app and website understands.

This converter does the work in your browser, on your own device. You add your .heic files, convert them and download ordinary JPG files.

How to Convert HEIC to JPG

  1. Drag your .heic files onto the page, or click Choose files and select them. You can add several at once.
  2. Check the preview of your photos.
  3. Click Convert to JPG and wait until each photo shows that it is done. The first time, the conversion code has to load, so the start can take a moment.
  4. Click Download JPG next to a photo to save it, or click Download All (ZIP) to save all the converted photos in one file.

Keep the page open while the photos are converting. Large photos and big batches take longer.

What is HEIC?

HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. It is Apple's name for the HEIF image format with HEVC compression. Apple started using it for photos on iPhones and iPads with iOS 11, because it keeps a photo in a smaller file than JPG at similar visible quality. You will see the file ending .heic, and sometimes .heif.

The problem is support. HEIC works well on Apple devices, but many Windows computers, Android phones, older programs and websites cannot open or accept it. That is the reason people convert their photos to JPG before they share or upload them.

HEIC vs JPG

FeatureHEICJPG
File sizeOften noticeably smaller for similar visible qualityUsually larger
Works onApple devices, and some other devices with extra supportAlmost every device, app and website
Upload to forms and websitesOften rejectedAccepted almost everywhere
Color detailCan hold richer color informationStandard 8-bit color
Extras in one fileCan store depth data, transparency and several imagesOne flat picture only
Quality lossCompressedCompressed, and a new save loses a little more
Best forKeeping many photos on an Apple phone with less storageSharing, uploading and opening anywhere

Quality and File Size

  • JPG is a lossy format. Every time a photo is saved as a JPG, a small amount of detail is lost. The tool saves with high-quality settings to keep the loss low, and at normal viewing size the difference is usually hard to see.
  • The JPG is usually bigger than the HEIC. HEIC compresses photos more efficiently, so the same picture takes more space as a JPG.
  • Keep the original. If you want the best possible quality or want to keep all the details of the photo, keep the HEIC file as well.
  • Need a smaller file? Use the Image Compressor & Resizer after the conversion, for example for a form that allows only a small file size.

Photo Information, Live Photos and Colors

Location, date and camera details

The JPG is a new file made from the picture. Information stored with the original photo, such as the location, date and camera details, is usually not copied into it. If you need that information, keep the original HEIC file.

Live Photos and photos with several images

Only a still picture is converted. The short video of a Live Photo is not part of the HEIC picture file, so you get the still image as a JPG. If a HEIC file contains more than one picture, the tool uses the main one. Videos are not converted by this tool.

Colors and HDR

Some newer iPhone photos use a wider range of colors and can contain HDR information. A normal JPG cannot keep all of it, so the converted photo is a standard version. Colors can look slightly different, mostly on bright or very colorful pictures.

Why Can't I Open HEIC Photos?

  • Windows: The Photos app may need extra extensions from the Microsoft Store before it can open HEIC. Some older programs cannot open it at all.
  • Android: Support depends on the phone, the Android version and the app that you use.
  • Websites and forms: Many upload forms, job portals, government forms and online stores accept only JPG or PNG, and refuse HEIC.
  • Older software: Programs that were made before HEIC existed cannot read it.
  • Sharing with other people: A friend or a colleague on another system may see an error or a blank file.

Converting to JPG avoids all of these, because JPG opens almost everywhere.

Other Ways to Get JPG Photos from an iPhone

MethodHow it works
Save new photos as JPGOn the iPhone, open Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. New photos are saved as JPG. This does not change photos that you already took
Transfer settings for a Mac or PCIn the iPhone Photos settings, the option to transfer to a Mac or PC can be set to convert photos automatically when they are copied
Export from a MacOn a Mac, Preview and Photos can export a HEIC photo as a JPG
This converterWorks on photos you already have, on any device with a browser, with no software to install

Menu names can change between iOS versions. Use this converter when you already have HEIC files and want JPG quickly.

Convert Many Photos and Download a ZIP

  • Add everything in one go. Drag many photos onto the page, or select several in the file browser.
  • Download one by one or all together. Each converted photo has its own Download JPG button, and Download All (ZIP) saves them together.
  • File names stay recognisable. A photo called IMG_1234.HEIC is saved as IMG_1234.jpg.
  • Large batches need memory. Converting very many or very large photos at once can slow down your browser. If that happens, convert them in smaller groups.

Tips

  • Keep the page open until every photo shows that it is done.
  • On a phone, convert a few photos at a time and keep the screen on.
  • Close other tabs if a big batch is slow.
  • Keep your originals if you care about location data or the best quality.
  • Check a converted photo before you delete the original, especially if you have many.
  • Reduce the size afterwards with the Image Compressor & Resizer if a form has a size limit.
  • Turn a JPG into a PDF with the JPG to PDF tool if you need to send photos as a document.

Common Problems and Fixes

  • A file shows an error: It may be damaged, or it may not be a real HEIC photo, for example a different file renamed to .heic. Try another copy of the photo.
  • The page is slow or stops: The photos are large or there are many of them. Convert fewer at a time and close other tabs.
  • The photo is already a JPG: Some phones and apps change photos to JPG when you pick them from the photo library. Those files do not need to be converted.
  • The colors look different: The original used a wider range of colors or HDR, which a standard JPG cannot keep.
  • The JPG is too big for a form: Use the Image Compressor & Resizer.
  • I cannot find the converted files on my phone: Check the downloads folder or the Files app. A ZIP file must be opened first to see the photos.

Privacy

  • Your photos are converted in your browser, on your own device, and they are not sent to our server.
  • When you add your first file, the code that does the conversion is downloaded to your browser. Your photos are not part of that download.
  • We do not save your photos or the converted files. They disappear when you close or reload the page, so download what you need.
  • On a shared or public computer, close the page and delete the downloaded files when you finish.
  • Only convert photos that you own or have the right to use, and respect the privacy of the people in them.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert HEIC to JPG?

Drag your .heic files onto the page or click to choose them. You can add several files at once. Check the preview, click Convert to JPG and wait until each photo is done. Then click Download JPG next to a photo, or Download All (ZIP) to get every converted photo in one file.

What is a HEIC file?

HEIC is an image format that iPhones and iPads use by default to save photos. It stores a photo in a smaller file than JPG at similar visible quality, but many Windows, Android and web tools cannot open it without extra software. That is why people convert HEIC photos to JPG.

Why does my iPhone save photos as HEIC?

Since iOS 11, iPhones use the High Efficiency setting by default, which saves photos as HEIC to use less storage. You can change this in Settings, under Camera and Formats, by choosing Most Compatible, which saves new photos as JPG. The menu names can differ between iOS versions.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion is done in your browser, on your own device, and your photos are not sent to our server. The conversion code itself is downloaded to your browser when you add your first file. Even so, use a device you trust, and close the page when you finish on a shared computer.

Will the JPG have the same quality as the HEIC?

JPG is a lossy format, so saving a photo as JPG always loses a small amount of detail. The tool saves with high-quality settings, so the difference is usually hard to see at normal size. If you need the original quality, keep the HEIC file as well.

Why is the JPG bigger than the HEIC?

HEIC compresses photos more efficiently than JPG, so the same photo usually takes more space as a JPG. If the file is too big for a form or an email, use the Image Compressor & Resizer afterwards.

Can I convert many photos at once?

Yes. Add several files at once, convert them and download them one by one or together with Download All (ZIP). Very many or very large photos can be slow and may use a lot of memory, so convert big batches in smaller groups if your browser slows down.

What does Download All (ZIP) do?

It puts all the converted JPG files into one ZIP file, so you can save them with a single click. Open the ZIP on your computer or phone to get the photos.

Is the location and date information kept in the JPG?

The JPG is a new file made from the picture. Information stored with the original, such as location, date and camera details, is usually not copied to it. If you need that information, keep the original HEIC file.

What happens to Live Photos and photos with several images?

Only a still picture is converted. The short video of a Live Photo is not part of the HEIC picture file, so you get the still image as a JPG. If a HEIC file contains more than one picture, the tool uses the main one.

Why do some colors look different after conversion?

Some newer iPhone photos use a wider range of colors and may contain HDR information. A normal JPG cannot keep all of it, so the converted photo is a standard version, and colors can look slightly different, mostly on bright or very colorful pictures.

Can I open HEIC files on Windows or Android without converting?

Sometimes. Windows may need extra extensions from the Microsoft Store, and support on Android depends on the phone and the app. Many websites, forms and older programs still do not accept HEIC, so converting to JPG is the simplest way to be sure it will open.

Does it work on an iPhone or other phones?

Yes, the page is designed for phones, and you can use it on the same iPhone that took the photos. Converting many large photos on a phone can be slow, so use a few at a time and keep the screen on while it works.

Which files can I upload?

HEIC files, with the .heic ending. Other formats, such as JPG or PNG, do not need conversion, and a file that is damaged or is not really a HEIC photo shows an error message.

Is this HEIC to JPG converter free?

Yes. The tool is free and needs no signup. Only convert photos that you own or have the right to use.
