What is URL Encoder and Decoder?

URL Encoder / Decoder is a free online tool for developers that converts normal text/URL into percent-encoded format (URL Encoding) and vice-versa. When you send data in URL, special characters like space, &, ?, = , Hindi text are not allowed. They need to be encoded. For example, space becomes %20, & becomes %26. This is called URL Encoding or Percent Encoding. Our tool does this instantly using JavaScript encodeURIComponent method.

For example: `the query value red shoes & socks becomes red%20shoes%20%26%20socks. Browsers often do this automatically, but developers need to do it themselves when working with APIs and query parameters..

How to Use URL Encoder / Decoder?

  1. Paste your normal URL or text with spaces/special characters in top box.
  2. Click Encode URL to convert it to safe URL format (e.g. space to %20).
  3. To decode, paste an encoded URL like `https%3A%2F%2Fgoogle.com%2Fsearch%3Fq%3Dtest` and click Decode URL.
  4. Result will appear in bottom box. Click Copy button to use it in your code/API.

Why URL Encoding is Needed?

1. For Developers & API: A query value with spaces or symbols must be encoded, for example ?q=red shoes should be sent as ?q=red%20shoes..
2. Non-English text: Hindi and other non-ASCII characters must be percent-encoded. For example, नमस्ते becomes %E0%A4%A8%E0%A4%AE%E0%A4%B8%E0%A5%8D%E0%A4%A4%E0%A5%87.
2. Reserved characters: Characters like &, =, ? and # have special meaning in a URL. Encoding a value stops them from being read as part of the URL structure.

Difference Between encodeURI vs encodeURIComponent?

encodeURI is for a whole URL. It keeps characters like : / ? & = # as they are. encodeURIComponent is for a single value, such as one query parameter, and it encodes those characters too. It leaves letters, digits and - _ . ! ~ * ' ( ) unchanged. Our tool uses encodeURIComponent, so encoding a full URL will also encode ://. That is correct when the URL is itself a parameter value.
