What Is an FD Calculator?
A Fixed Deposit (FD) calculator estimates the maturity amount and interest on a fixed deposit. An FD is a deposit with a bank or post office for a fixed period at a fixed interest rate. It is generally considered a low-risk option. Enter the amount, rate, period and compounding frequency, and the calculator shows what you would get at maturity.
How to Use the FD Calculator
- Enter the Principal Amount, the amount you want to deposit.
- Enter the Annual Interest Rate. Check your bank's current FD rate for your tenure.
- Enter the Time Period in years or months.
- Select the Compounding Frequency. Many banks compound FD interest quarterly.
- Click Calculate FD to see the maturity amount and total interest.
FD Interest Formula
A = P × (1 + r / n)n × t
A is the maturity amount, P is the principal, r is the yearly interest rate as a decimal (7.5% = 0.075), n is the number of times interest is compounded in a year and t is the time in years. For example, 18 months is t = 1.5. This formula is for a cumulative FD, where interest is added to the deposit and paid at maturity.
Things to Know About FD Interest
| Item | What to know |
|---|---|
| Cumulative vs payout | This calculator is for cumulative FDs. If you take interest as monthly or quarterly payout, the interest is not compounded. |
| Interest rates | Rates depend on the bank, the tenure and your category. As an example, SBI's general public rates range from about 3.05% to 6.45% a year, and senior citizens get extra interest. Rates change often, so check your bank's website. Last checked on 30 September 2026. |
| Senior citizens | Banks usually offer senior citizens higher interest, often an extra 0.50%. |
| Tax and TDS | FD interest is taxed at your income tax slab rate. Banks deduct TDS if your interest at one bank crosses a yearly limit. Check the current limit and Form 15G/15H rules with your bank. |
| Tax-saver FD | A 5-year tax-saver FD has a lock-in and can give a deduction under Section 80C in the old tax regime. |
| Early withdrawal | Banks usually charge a penalty or pay a lower rate if you break an FD early. |
FD Calculation Examples
| Deposit | Rate and period | Compounding | Maturity amount (about) |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹1,00,000 | 7% for 5 years | Quarterly | ₹1,41,478 (interest ₹41,478) |
| ₹5,00,000 | 6.5% for 3 years | Quarterly | ₹6,06,700 (interest ₹1,06,700) |
Effect of Compounding Frequency
₹1,00,000 at 7% for 5 years:
| Compounding | Maturity amount (about) |
|---|---|
| Yearly | ₹1,40,255 |
| Half-yearly | ₹1,41,060 |
| Quarterly | ₹1,41,478 |
| Monthly | ₹1,41,763 |
More frequent compounding gives slightly higher returns. Banks may use their own day-count rules, so your bank's figure can differ a little.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is an FD calculator?
It is a tool that estimates the maturity amount and interest on a fixed deposit for a given amount, rate, period and compounding frequency.
2. How is FD interest calculated?
For a cumulative FD, we use compound interest: A = P × (1 + r / n)^(n × t). Here P is the principal, r is the rate as a decimal, n is the compounding frequency per year and t is the time in years.
3. What is the compounding frequency in an FD?
Many banks compound FD interest quarterly. Some use monthly, half-yearly or yearly compounding. The more often interest is compounded, the slightly higher your maturity amount.
4. What is the current FD interest rate?
It depends on the bank, the tenure and your category. For example, SBI's general public rates range from about 3.05% to 6.45% a year. Senior citizens usually get extra interest. Check your bank's website for today's rate.
5. Does this calculator work for interest payout FDs?
No. It is meant for cumulative FDs. With monthly or quarterly payout, interest is paid out and not compounded.
6. Can I calculate an FD for months?
Yes. You can enter the period in years or months and choose any of the four compounding options.
7. Is my data private?
Yes. The calculation runs in your browser and your amounts are not sent to our server.
