What Is an RD Calculator?
A Recurring Deposit (RD) is a savings scheme offered by banks and post offices. You deposit a fixed amount every month for a fixed period and earn interest on each deposit. An RD calculator estimates your total investment, total interest and maturity amount. Enter your monthly deposit, the annual interest rate and the tenure in years or months.
How to Use the RD Calculator
- Enter your Monthly Deposit.
- Enter the Annual Interest Rate. The Post Office 5-year RD rate is 6.7% for the Oct-Dec 2026 quarter. For a bank RD, use your bank's rate for your tenure.
- Enter the Tenure in years or months.
- Click Calculate RD to see the invested amount, interest, maturity amount and a year-wise breakdown.
RD Maturity Formula
M = P × [(1 + i)n − 1] / [1 − (1 + i)−1/3]
M is the maturity amount and P is the monthly deposit. The interest rate i is the annual rate divided by 4 (as a decimal, so 6.7% gives i = 0.01675), and n is the number of quarters (months ÷ 3). Banks and the Post Office compound RD interest quarterly. Your bank's figure can differ slightly because of its own rounding rules.
RD vs FD
| Recurring Deposit (RD) | Fixed Deposit (FD) | |
|---|---|---|
| How you deposit | A fixed amount every month | One lump sum |
| Interest is earned on | Each instalment, from its deposit date | The full amount, from day one |
| Best for | Regular savers with a monthly surplus | People with a lump sum to invest |
| Interest rates | Often similar. Check your bank or post office for current rates. | |
For a lump sum, use the FD Calculator.
